Each tool was compared using its own product pages and help articles: payment methods, approvals before payment, vendor bank-detail handling, fraud controls and accounting sync. Checked November 2026.

The best bill pay software pays vendors by ACH, check, wire or international transfer only after each bill has been coded and approved. It also keeps bill approval separate from payment release. Separation matters because, in the 2026 AFP Payments Fraud and Control Survey, about three in four U.S. organizations reported attempted or actual payments fraud in 2025. MakersHub is the top pick. MakersHub is AP automation for organizations that track spend by project, location, program or entity.
MakersHub reads every part of every bill, codes each cost to the right place and puts it in front of the right people before it's paid. MakersHub is set up around how your business already works, and our team configures it with you. The other seven tools here are mostly built around the payment itself: a payments network, card spend, global payouts or mass payouts. Which one fits depends on where your risk is: getting payments out the door, or making sure each one is right before it goes.
Every tool below pays vendors electronically and syncs with major accounting systems, MakersHub included. The differences are in what happens before the payment and what each one was built for first.
| Tool | What it is | Payment methods | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MakersHub | AP automation with built-in vendor payments that codes and routes each bill for approval before it can be paid | ACH, expedited transfers, check, eCheck, wire, real-time and international; release now, schedule or hold | Best for growing businesses that track spend by project, location, program or entity, with every line of every bill coded to the right one and approved before it's paid. |
| BILL | Payables and receivables platform with its own vendor network | ACH, card, check and international wire, plus accelerated and instant options | Teams that want payables and receivables from one provider, with a network many suppliers already use |
| Melio | Bill pay built to pay any business bill any way you want | ACH, card, check, same-day bank or wire, instant transfers and international | Small businesses that want to pay by card, even when a vendor doesn't take cards |
| Ramp | Spend platform that combines corporate cards, expenses and bill pay | ACH including same-day, card, check and domestic or international wire | Companies that want cards, expenses and bill pay in one spend platform |
| Tipalti | Global payables platform for paying payees across countries | 50+ methods across 200+ countries and territories, including ACH, wire, check and PayPal | Companies paying large numbers of payees in many countries and currencies |
| AvidXchange | Bill payment network that enrolls your suppliers for you | Virtual card, direct deposit and printed, mailed checks | Mid-market teams that want a provider to contact suppliers and handle how each one gets paid |
| Routable | Mass payouts platform for paying many vendors and contractors | Same-day and standard ACH, check, wire, RTP and FedNow, 220+ countries | Companies paying large volumes of vendors or contractors on fast rails |
| Plooto | Payables and receivables payments for small businesses and accounting firms | EFT (Canada), ACH (U.S.), card, check and international | Businesses that pay vendors in both Canada and the U.S. |
MakersHub also handles approval routing, fraud controls and ACH, check and wire payments. The other tools are strongest at the payment step they were built around.
Most bill pay comparisons rank tools on how many ways they can send money. Payment methods count, but by the time a payment goes out, the expensive mistakes have already happened or been caught. A bill coded to the wrong job gets paid on time anyway, and so does a duplicate invoice or a transfer to a vendor account someone changed last week.
What matters more is what the tool checks before money leaves. Was the bill read line by line, coded to the right account and project, matched to the purchase order where there is one, and approved by the person who owns the cost? If the answer is yes, the payment step is the easy part. Our comparison of AP approval software covers the approval side in more depth.
Some bill pay tools start at the payment: you upload a bill, pick a date, and the money moves. Others put capture, coding and approval in front of payment, so nothing goes out until it's been checked. Ask each vendor to show you a multi-line bill going from arrival to payment, and watch where a person has to step in.
Separation of duties means the person who approves a bill isn't the same person who releases the payment for it. It's one of the oldest controls in AP, and it's easy to lose when one login can do both. Look for role-based permissions, a second authorization above a dollar threshold and duplicate detection.
Business email compromise, the scam where a fraudster poses as a vendor or executive to redirect a payment, affected 74% of organizations in the AFP's 2026 survey. The usual version is an email asking you to update a vendor's bank account. Ask how each tool collects bank details in the first place, whether a vendor can change them by email and whether anyone is alerted when they change.
Nacha counted 1.4 billion Same Day ACH payments in 2025, up 16.7% from 2024, and close to 8.1 billion business-to-business ACH payments. But checks haven't gone away. In the AFP survey, 72% of organizations that use checks plan to keep using them, and 68% of those cite vendor requirements. So a bill pay tool needs both: fast electronic rails and a check process with real protection, such as Positive Pay, the bank service that only clears checks you've issued.
“Whether it’s a neighborhood dentist’s office or a multinational corporation, no business should be sending or receiving checks in 2026.”
Jane Larimer, President and CEO, Nacha, January 2026That may be where payments are headed, but most AP teams still have vendors who insist on paper checks, so check protection stays on the list.
Some tools debit your own bank account on the payment date. Others ask you to fund a balance or wallet first. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you're buying. Then look at the record after payment: check numbers, ACH trace numbers and mailing dates captured automatically, and the payment synced back to your accounting system so nobody reconciles by hand.
What it is: AP automation with built-in vendor payments. Best for growing businesses that track spend by project, location, program or entity, with every line of every bill coded to the right one and approved before it's paid.
MakersHub's AI engine, WiseVision, reads every line of every bill, codes each one to the right account, job, class or entity, and routes the bill to the person who owns the cost. Only an approved bill can be paid, and where there's a purchase order, the bill is matched against it line by line first. Bill approval and payment authorization stay separate, with role-based permissions and duplicate detection, so no one person can approve a bill and release the funds for it. High-value payments can require an extra authorization above a threshold you set.
You choose the method per payment: ACH, check, eCheck, wire, real-time or international, and you can release it now, schedule it for the due date or hold it. International payments show the exchange rate, fees and expected delivery date before they go out. Vendors add bank details through an encrypted, time-stamped link and get a payment summary linking to the original bill. No portal login needed. Check numbers, ACH trace numbers and mailing dates are logged automatically. See how vendor payments work in MakersHub.
MakersHub is SOC 2 Type II certified, with Positive Pay protection on check payments and encrypted collection of vendor bank details. With MakersHub eChecks, vendors who still want checks can print them on regular paper and deposit them from their phone. Approvers use MakersHub without training. They approve from email in one click, and see only the bills that are theirs.
What it is: a payables and receivables platform with its own vendor network.
BILL pays by ACH, card, check and international wire, with accelerated and instant options alongside standard ACH, and debits your bank account on the process date. Vendors can be found on or invited to the BILL network. Its controls page lists Dual Control and approval routing by vendor, location, department and GL account. If most of your vendors are already on BILL, that network saves a lot of onboarding. If you're comparing it with other options, see our list of BILL alternatives for accounts payable.
What it is: bill pay for small businesses. Melio's own line is "pay any business bill, any way you want."
Melio pays by ACH or card, including card payments to vendors that don't accept cards, plus checks with faster delivery options, same-day bank transfers or wires, instant transfers and international payments in local currency. You choose the debit date, and vendors choose how they'd like to be paid. Melio lists two-way sync with QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite.
What it is: a spend platform that combines corporate cards, expense management and bill pay.
Ramp's bill pay sends standard and same-day ACH, card payments, checks and domestic or international wires, and debits your connected bank account on the scheduled date. It captures invoice line items and matches bills to purchase orders, and Ramp says its fraud agent flags unexpected changes to vendor banking details. It's the natural pick if you want cards, expenses and bill pay under one roof.
What it is: a global payables platform.
Tipalti's reach is the draw: more than 200 countries and territories and more than 50 payment methods, including ACH, local bank transfers, wires, checks and PayPal. Its supplier portal handles onboarding, and Tipalti says it validates bank details such as SWIFT and IBAN codes and screens payees against sanctions lists. For more options in that space, see our list of Tipalti alternatives.
What it is: a bill payment network, AvidPay, that enrolls your suppliers for you.
AvidXchange contacts your suppliers to enroll them. It funds each payment by debiting your bank account, then pays by virtual card, direct deposit or a printed check mailed from its own print sites. That suits mid-market teams that would rather a provider handle supplier enrollment and payment delivery.
What it is: a payouts platform, built in its own words to "deliver mass payouts, without the operational chaos."
Speed is Routable's focus: ACH (same-day, next-day or standard), wire, check at multiple speeds and instant payment through RTP and FedNow. It reaches more than 220 countries. It pays from your bank account without prefunding, with prefunding available if you want it, and lets you set approval rules by vendor, GL account, department, location, project and custom fields.
What it is: payables and receivables payments for small businesses and accounting firms.
Plooto covers both sides of the border: EFT in Canada and ACH in the U.S. It also pays by card, by printed and mailed check and internationally across more than 40 countries, with same-day and next-day options through Plooto Instant. Plooto offers multi-level approval chains and dual approval above a dollar threshold, and syncs with QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite.
We also looked at other payment platforms whose current product pages we couldn't fully verify this month. We left those out until we can check them, which doesn't mean they're a bad fit.
If you run QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Bill Pay is built in. According to Intuit's help center, it supports separate roles for bill clerks, approvers and payers. Bill Pay Elite adds approval workflows that trigger on amount, vendor or location, with up to seven approvers and five layers of approval. We don't rank it here, because QuickBooks is the accounting system the other tools connect to. Teams that want line-level coding, job-based approvals or PO matching inside their AP workflow often pair QuickBooks with a dedicated AP tool. For that side of the decision, see the best AP automation software for QuickBooks.
Start with what goes wrong today. If late payments and manual check runs are the whole problem, a payments-first tool may be enough. If you're paying thousands of payees abroad, a global payouts platform is built for that. If your bigger worry is paying the wrong amount, charging it to the wrong job or sending it to a bank account that changed last week, those reviews have to happen before payment. That's what MakersHub does.
“I highly recommend MakersHub. Payment approvals are clear and convenient, vendor information is easy to collect securely, and payment turnaround time is quick. I’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback from vendors and users!”
Jeannine Dorroh, Financial Administrator, The Land Trust of North AlabamaIf you're also weighing cards against bank payments, our piece on virtual cards versus AP automation walks through the trade-offs, and paying vendors by ACH and check from one AP platform covers the basics.
The best bill pay software pays vendors by the methods they need only after each bill has been coded, approved and checked, with approval kept separate from payment release. MakersHub is the top pick: best for growing businesses that track spend by project, location, program or entity, with every line of every bill coded to the right one and approved before it's paid.
Vendor payment automation is software that schedules and sends payments to vendors by ACH, check, wire or other methods, and records each payment back to the accounting system. MakersHub automates vendor payments as the last step of AP, after each bill is read, coded and approved, with every authorization logged.
Most teams need ACH, with a faster option for urgent payments, plus checks for vendors that still require them, wire transfers and international payments if they pay vendors abroad. MakersHub pays by ACH, expedited transfer, check, eCheck, wire, real-time payment and international transfer, chosen per payment.
Keep bill approval separate from payment release, collect and change vendor bank details through a controlled process rather than email, and protect checks with Positive Pay. MakersHub separates approval and authorization by role, collects bank details through encrypted links, adds Positive Pay to check payments and is SOC 2 Type II certified.
Not quite: bill pay software focuses on sending the payment, while AP automation also covers capturing, coding, matching and approving the bill before it's paid. MakersHub covers both, so the payment step only happens once the bill has been checked.
It depends on the tool: some debit your own bank account on the payment date, while others ask you to fund a balance or wallet first. Ask any vendor you're considering, including MakersHub, to show you exactly where the money sits before each payment goes out.
Yes, most bill pay tools sync payments and bills with QuickBooks Online, and some also support QuickBooks Desktop. MakersHub syncs two ways with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, as well as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Xero and Intuit Enterprise Suite.
